My second windows fresh install after viruses and maybe spyware. (6 months)

Can you recommend some antivirus software and maybe some spyware software as well or anything worth buying that will help keep my computer in check?

Thanks so much :)

Windows Defender is built in to Wind 7 - 8 & 10 the bonus is its free.

I prefer to use Kaspersky Total security, which sends my secrets apparently to Russia

If 10 the built in one works just fine.

On the browser, install uBlock Origin and tick all the ones in malware domains, that will block out most of the harmful stuff on the web.

But the best one will be common sense :p.

Defender is fine but I would look more on how you got the virus or malware and learn from it as defender and some basic knowledge can go a long way to prevent viruses.

Some things are

- don't open or click on attachments in e mails your not expecting to receive

- if you do get a e mail from PayPal (for example) always go to the site and login rather than going through any links as this stops you going to fake sites.

For extra software I find malware bytes good to use as well

Like hondo I use the FREE version of Kaspersky which has the same engine as the paid except you dont have extra features. It was available in the UK around October so give that or Panda FREE a whirl.

Malwarebytes is a good shout, although I only have the free version so it doesn't have the active monitoring but it can pick up stuff with a scan if something does get past Defender's monitors. Although since uBlock blocks all the bad stuff, I haven't had any infections for years. The rest of the family however...

Thanks.... is windows defender as good as paid AV software?

Years back I used to run Avast AV the free version, I must have used it for 6 months or more, I felt the PC was going sluggish so installed a trial version of KIS within minutes that found the PCs MBR was infected with Rootkits which Avast had somehow missed.
After that, I never trusted free AV again.

What makes it worse is they bought up AVG making a humungous amount of user base, unfortunately as people like free stuff it has been used for many a year now. As you have found (and so did I) when clients have machines to fix I can hand on heart say lots of them use these which are not great for low specced laptops at all. I do try them out on guinea pig machines from time to time to keep with the interfaces.

£25 a year on norton for 10 devices and never had an issue in all my time using it which is a longtime now. being cheap when it comes to security is not a good move imo.
