I am getting annoyed now because I can only play Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer half the time...because my Steam only works half the time...

Please anyone, is there anyway atall of running Modern Warfare 2 without Steam?

Thanks in advance. :)

What problems are you having with Steam? I've put 12 hours into the game so far and haven't had a single issue; it has been perfect.

As for running it without Steam - probably possible given the right cracks but that's what bad people do :)

Well, it just won't connect half the time when my internet connection is fine. Apart from that, it works perfectly.

I really don't understand why you have to run it through Steam anyway... Are Steam paying Infinity Ward huge wads of cash or something??

No they are not, in fact it's probably the opposite.

MW2 ships with Steam Works, so IW or Activision would have to pay to licence Steam Works from Valve as well as paying them a publishers royalty for every game sold.

You can always set MW2 to be available offline when you are actually connected to Steam, so it works when you can't.

Not an ideal solution I know.

How do I make Modern Warfare 2 available offline? Steam decides to work at the moment...

Simplest way is to disconnect your PC from the internet, start Steam and when it won't be able to find connection it will ask you if you want to start it offline.

Sometimes Steam says it can't start in offline mode because there is no profile stored on your computer, even though you used Steam successfully on the same machine not long ago.

I like Steam overall but there's no denying it can be a pain at times. In truth it should be more user friendly than it is, remembering that we are paying customers who only want to use the software we paid money for.

I have to say I completely agree ;) Thank you all for your help. :)

I hope this experience educates you as to the negatives about Steam.

Intentionally or not, Steam is a 3rd party client that you cannot not use, exerting an unreasonable amount of control over the way you play your games. If you don't want repeats of this experience, or dissatisfaction with Steam in the future, I'd buy elsewhere. There are plenty of good alternatives that give equally good prices (e.g. Direct2Drive's recent enormous birthday sales means they'll probably continue to have sales; EA's store recently selling Mass Effect for a fiver in comparison to Steam's present £6.49...)

Is there a pattern to the time of day steam doesn't work?

Some ISP's traffic management might be incorrectly tagging it as P2P throttling it or blocking it causing login problems... I know theres a bug on BT broadband traffic management where steam will knock out the connection if its updating anything during "peak" times - i.e. most of the afternoon and evening.

THANK YOU! Was driving me nuts as I would come home from work, try to download a game only for it to knock out my HTTP traffic so couldn't browse the web. Thought it was just my pc.

Nope its a bug with BT's traffic management that they refuse to acknowledge - I've been banging on about it for awhile with no fixes...

If your in a position to proxify the traffic through a SSL or similiar encrypted tunnel then it won't knock out the rest of the connection but unfortunatly its not straight forward to do that with steam.
