I'm looking at this buying this sound card:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-087-CL&groupid=701&catid=11&subcat=

however i am unsure if i am able to run the normal 5.1 channel speakers i have now which consist of the usual green, orange and black cable etc for the seperate speakers. I'm looking at the rear i/o of the sound card on ocuk's website but don't see the colour coding for it unlike this sound card:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-084-CL&groupid=701&catid=11&subcat=

which you can see has the clear colour coding for each cable to connecting to it.

Any help on this?

Thanks

5.1 connections are standard. Some colour code the sockets to make it easier, but which ever sound card or motherboard you have, 5.1 PC speakers will connect to it.

So even like the non colour coded ones on the creative sound blaster Z it will still work with all the cables i have?

Just dont wanna get this card to find out it won't connect and i end up having to buy new speakers :(

all pc soundcards should have the outputs

FRONT
SUB/CENTRE
SIDE
REAR

obviously a 5.1 card wont have side and rear outputs it will just have one of them

the colour of the ports doesn't make a difference

Thank you Arknor, im just uncertain on which card to get now:

I'm looking at:

creative soundblaster Z card
Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 card
Asus ROG Phoebus card aswel

I really dont know whats best tbh lol, im using it purely for gaming and movies and im using creative inspire A520 5.1 speakers.

I bought a really cheap budget asus card and tbh the official drivers are terrible and it's likely the same for all asus soundcard drivers.

I'm using some unofficial third party ones some guy made himself cos asus are so **** and the sound quality is much better than the official ones.....

Atleast with creative you know your getting decent drivers

Try telling that to all the people who have had problems with Creative drivers. Never had any issue with Asus drivers myself, but plenty of people do though. It's the luck of the draw. Creative and Asus are as bad as each other really, when it takes modified drivers to solve issues for people. Issues they should be addressing themselves, not relying on anyone else to do it.

Sound quality is no better using modified drivers, whether it be Creative or Asus cards. It's only better if the official drivers aren't doing their job properly.

well I never had a problem with creative drivers in the past and all of the features worked as advertised.
I bought into the creative drivers suck and learnt the hardway.

although I remember back in thw win2k days when a lot of games would bsod because of the soundcard drivers

I could barely get more than 2.1 sound with the official drivers unless I messed about enabling and disabling all of the souncard options until the rear speakers magicly came alive.

the brainbit drivers just work

Really makes me uneasy tbh cos it's not a small amount im spending here guys....

So the question still remains, creative or Asus? There doesn't seem to be any other brand out there!

I have owned all the cards your looking at, so can tell you 1st hand...

Get the creative card, I eventually settled on a titanium pci-e sound blaster (some years ago). By far the most stable/good sounding card, the asus was buggy, I'm sure they work good for some people but creative have recently got there act together, drivers wise.

Creative my friend, I'm still using the creative years later! .

From first hand experiance the Creative Z is a really good card,

I had many problems with the Asus ROG which ive no doubt have been resolved now since I got rid, but the Z sounds fantastic.

You had a problem with Asus drivers, I'm not disputing that. Just that the modified ones don't sound drastically better than Asus' own. Getting it working with modified drivers, of course it's going to sound a hell of lot better than with broken ones. ;)
