Can you sync a wireless controller via the charging cable?

I took my.xbox 360 slim apart to fit a fan mod. Any way I notice my sync button doesnt press in right so doesnt work. My mate just lent my pad as well so I cant sync it. Am not at home now to test but if I use the USB charging cable will that sync my pad,.even when I unplug it?
