Can you transport a washing machine in a car?

Other than it physically fitting is there any reason you could not transport a washing machine in a car?

I ask because I know they are always shipped upright in a van, and to go into a car would mean it would be on its side.

Any reason that this might be a bad idea?

Thanks all. It's my GF's washing machine and I'm going to have it at my place. She's only had it 5 months and still has the bolts that were mentioned so I can secure the drum.

I just wasn't sure if there was anything I needed to watch for. The smelly water is a good point!!
