Can you use power leads from one power supply with a different one?

I have an old Nvidia 980Ti which I want to put in my new computer. The 980Ti currently has a power supply lead hooked up to it with two eight-pin connectors. I'd like to take the 980Ti out along with the power supply leads and plug it straight into my new computer. Is that going to be OK?

Or do I need to hunt around in the loft looking for the power supply leads for my new computer?

Do you mean a molex to 8-pin adapter or an actually power cable from a modular psu?
If it is the molex to 8-pin it is ok to use any.

Ah, sorry. Yes I mean two molex to 8 pin leads. At least I seem to remember that is what is in the machine. It has been a long time since I last opened it up.

Thanks for the info.

I wouldn't recommend using Molex adapters in any case, especially for such a hungry card. Is your power supply not up to the job?

N.B. if it were leads direct from PSU to card, those are a very bad idea to mix between brands too. Different pinouts on most brands have led to Bad Things in the past.

I see. I'll dig out the cables from my new computer then. I was just being lazy as I knew my old computer was already set up with the leads from my old power supply.

My new computer already has a 1080Ti in it but I need to put the 980Ti in it as well so I can do PCIe GPU passthrough in Linux so I can play games in a virtual machine running Windows 10 under Linux and for that, you need two GPUs.

Definitely sounds like it's worth making sure it's all wired sensibly with those two cards in it. Must be a 750W+ supply?

DONT
some guy on youtube called science studio done the same thingy and his psu died

some super flower (some rebranded leadex psus as evga g2) psu cables have capacitors inside them

The capacitors are just to suppress ripple. The real problem is that psu's are made by multiple oems and will have different pinouts. If you swap leads from one psu onto a psu that uses a different platform then the worse case is a bang coinciding with some of your expensive components going up in smoke.

OK. Thanks for the feedback. I'll get out my new computers power supply leads instead. I'm quite looking forward to getting PCI passthrough working on my computer so I can play games on Windows 10 while using Linux as my primary operating system.

Interested to see how that goes, I was full-time Linux until I got back into PC gaming a few years ago. Then Windows slowly crept back in!
