Can you wear glasses with a Quest 2 and use it on a gaming laptop?

Our 11 year old lad has mentioned he'd like a VR headset to play games on his Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop. I don't know a thing about VR headsets but I think this laptop is okay to run one on, is that correct? The Quest 2 seems to be good bang per buck so I think we will go for one of those, unless anyone has any other recommendations? He wants to play No Mans Sky and Subnautica, those types of games. Do they connect up via a cable or are the headsets wireless?

Most importantly though, our little lad wears glasses - can he wear them whilst using the Quest 2?

Thanks.

I don't recommend wearing glasses with any VR headset, VR lenses are easily scratched and non-replacable, plus you can also scuff your glasses.

Clip-on prescription lenses work well and aren't that too expensive.

As for gaming laptops being capable. That really depends on the spec of the laptop. You need a really good GPU, preferably a Nvidia one for wireless or USB connection, as on top of rendering the game the GPU needs to encode the video for wireless or USB.

Any VR game can be played wirelessly, but some complex games might not have the best image quality due to video compression on Quest 2, and wi-fi connection quality.

Thanks, appreciate the info.

The Legion 5 gaming laptop spec is

AMD Ryzen 7, RTX 3060, 8Gb RAM, 512 GB SSD

That spec should be ok, though you might have to turn down some detail levels or resolution on demanding games. You can never really tell how good it will be until you try it.

Thanks all. Yes, the standalone games look pretty decent too, just wanting to check it will play already established PC games.

I have looked further into the whole VR thing this morning and its all a bit confusing to a complete newbie like me, I want to make sure we aren't spending £400 on something my boy will get bored with after a couple of months.

Read a few things about supported GPU's and there were some posts on forums saying the Nvidia 3060 isn't supported and doesn't work with the Quest 2? Find that quite strange, surely that isn't the case?

Also, I now see that to play on PC you need a long USB C VR cable, the Meta one looks like it costs around £90 although there are cheaper alternatives available. Is that right, I spend £400 on a bit of VR kit then have to shell out another £90 for a USB C cable? Really!!!!!????

The 3060 should be supported. Maybe there is an issue with some laptops not supporting the Quest 2 because of the way the GPU is integrated into the laptop. So it might be a laptop thing not a GPU thing. Got a link to any of the posts making that claim?

You can get cheaper cables that will work just fine. The Oculus Cable is more expensive because it's very light.

You could get rid of the cable altogether and use the Quest 2 wirelessly for PCVR games. However, you would need to have the laptop you are using connected by a network cable to the router in your home.

If you have questions, ask, we will try our best to get you sorted :)

I just Googled '3060 not supported Quest 2' and a few posts came up. Yes - I'd have thought a 3060 was supported too which is why I thought I'd mention it.

Good to hear the cheaper cables work fine, and his laptop is already connected via a network cable to the home router so is it fairly straightforward enough to hook the headset up via wifi in that case? Any drawbacks to using it over wifi compared to a cable? I take it by 'PCVR' you mean games like No Mans Sky on Steam? Thanks for the help, its all a bit confusing this VR stuff to an old 51 year old bloke like me!!! :D

For youngsters like me who are only 50 it's easy peasy :p And yes, PCVR means games that are on installed on your PC, like No Man's Sky on Steam :)

Just a few things to check about your network setup.

Check to make sure it's a Gigabit connection between your router and your laptop.
Is your router in the same room as where you intend to use the Quest 2?
Is it a pretty new router? Or is it years old?

The difference between the Cable and wireless is that wireless might not look as good. However, it depends a lot on the game and what your network setup is like. I have wireless and the Oculus cable. And I barely use the cable at all. 99% of my VR gaming is wireless.

And don't worry about the 3060 not supported. Just googled what you googled and it's not an issue. Will provide an explanation if you need one.

Thanks, melmac :)

Yes, the router is in the same room - it's a BT Smart Hub I think, not sure what model but its not that old. I can check.

Happy to know the 3060 is not an issue!!

Some of the SmartHubs only have 10/100Mb LAN connections not gigabit ones. If they aren't Gigabit ports, you won't have a good VR experience on the Quest 2.

If it's in the same room, it should have good enough wireless connection for the Quest 2 as long as there aren't a number of other devices using the 5ghz channel at the same.

Sorry was too lazy to write an explanation for the 3060!! :D

this is why i bought a new one , rather than using the default ISP supplied one, so i can have a lot more "control" and what goes where

I wear glasses
You get a glasses spacer in the box, but I also bought lens protectors just in case

Or you can get prescription lenses
Hi all,

Back again with another question if I may, related to ShiWarrior's reply. I've now ordered a Quest 2 128Gb. So in the box I believe you get a glasses spacer included. Am I right in thinking you are better to buy separate lens protectors as well for use with glasses? Is it this sort of thing I would be looking for? Thanks.

You can use them, but bare in mind , they only go around the outside, so you could still damage your lenses, but less likely. I had those on my quest 2 and worked
But on my pico 4, I bought proper protectors from vr optition becuase it covers the lens in its entirely.

Wouldn't it be preferable to buy the prescription lens protectors/inserts from somewhere like VR Optician? That way you don't have to wear your glasses when using your Q2 and your Q2 lenses are protected.

Cheers all, thanks for the replies. Yes - its a Christmas present for our lad so I guess we won't know how his glasses are going to affect it until he tries it on. So prescription lenses might be an option or then again he might not have any hassle using it with glasses or them rubbing. His glasses aren't that large framed and are thin lensed so fingers crossed he doesn't have any issues with wearing them. We shall see once Santa delivers!!! :D
