Hi folks,

Planning a holiday to Canada later this year (September to be precise). Wife is eager to go there as she wants to visit Niagara Falls.

Beyond Niagara falls what else is there to see and do?

Im an animal enthusiast and would love to see some animals whilst we're there. I dont want to go trekking or hiking if I can help it, as I have a bad back and the missus isnt to keen on hiking either.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Will you only be around Niagara or are you going elsewhere in Canada. It might help for the advice since it is a pretty big place.

If you are anywhere near Whistler then taking a trip up the mountain is quite nice and if you are lucky you might see some bears on the way. There is an aquarium/sealife centre in Vancouver.

I went to canada adventure training when i was in the forces and had a wild time.

I went to the calgary stampede which was mental!!!

I stopped an adventure training camp called Trails End Camp, look them up they may do day excursions they are very friendly. Did some amazing horse riding through the rockies and also kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, sailing, parachuting and glacier swimming.

Canada is an amazing place and i will be going back in the future.

Visit Toronto and go up the C.N Tower, when I went their to visit my aunt back in 1991 (I was only 9/10 then) it was the tallest free-standing structure. It has a restaurant at the top which does a full revolution every hour. It's good as when you visit the toilet you come back and your table has move about 10 feet.

Could visit the Skydome I guess which is next to the tower and home to the Toronto Blue Jays (Baseball).

Best advice is get a guide or dvd of the country, lots to see. :)

The nearest big city to niagra is Toronto. Although that is still quite some drive from the falls. Ottowa is also quite nice but thats like driving 300ish miles. Then further north east you have Montreal (350 miles) and Quebec (500 miles). Couldnt comment on either Montreal or Quebec as I have only driven through them on my way from Nova Scotia to Toronto which was about 1500 miles. Toronto how ever is a great play. Loads of nice places to eat, even more good pubs to get drunk in, loads of decent shoping to keep the other half happy and the people there are really friendly.

Niagara Falls is really only a day trip, but if you go a few miles out you'll find a lot of nice little towns and wineries. You'd probably be best staying in or around Toronto for the majority of your trip. Toronto zoo is pretty awesome, it's massive anyway.

And it's got a glass floor, which is superb, once you pluck up the courage to stand on it :D

Cheers for the responses so far folks.

Sorry for the sketchy info but we only started talking about this yesterday. Niagara falls seems like the place to start and then Toronto Zoo seems a wicked idea.

We'll probably be going for 7 days. Apologies for my pathetic geography but where in Canada is Niagara Falls? Am I correct in thinking it is in Ontario?

The Canadian side is in Ontario, and the American side is in New York. There's a bridge connecting both sides, but it takes a long time to get over it as you have to deal with border control, so you really need to pick a side to visit. I think it took us about 2 hours to drive there from Toronto, but it's mostly a nice drive.

EDIT: if you do a search on google images for "Niagara Falls Ontario Map", you'll get an idea of where it's situated.

It takes ages to drive across the bridge but walking through border control is much quicker, however there's nothing on the NY side so I wouldn't advise crossing from Canada.

Toronto is in Ontario :) Think of it like this, Ontario is the county (province) and Toronto is a city in Ontario.

I've recently discovered the VIA railroad trips, there's one that goes through the Rockies stopping at places like Jasper. There's loads to see and do in the mountains. I'd recommend a trip to Banff (nice little town). There's also trips by bus upto the Glacier. Vancouver is my favorite city over here. Google for it and see if it takes your fancy.

I've got some relatives living on Vancouver Island and in Toronto. I really should blag a trip over there at some point.

also another vote for toronto and and CN tower. spent 9 days in toronto. the CN tower is amazing, went up it twice, once during the day to have a good look around, then went back another night to the resturant. (have a big wallet if your going to the resturant)

when in toronto the toronto islands are a must as well, especilly at night, think the last ferry back was about 11.30. nice day out if you like taking pictures. theres a little man made beach there was well.

royal ontario museum is worth checking out as well.

theres an old distillery factory as well, with shops and resturants thats worth a look.

the eaton center is abvoiusly a good place to go for shopping, hundreads of shops and resturants.

and as said above the rodgers center for the baseball is cool, must have if you've never seen a game befor. and the hocky hall of fame.

as said above niagra is very touristy. a couple of days there at the most is enough.
