Was wondering if anyone here has cancelled the Express Upgrade (via moduslink) to Vista?

I originally used the service as I bought an Acer laptop which came with the offer. This subsequently broke, and I got my money back and then bought a new laptop that came pre-installed with Vista.

Trying to get information on whether its worth trying to cancel the order, or would it be worth still paying the £14 for the upgrade if I receive an OEM disc which could be later installed onto another system? i.e. would the upgrade disc I receive be tied to the original laptop that was returned?

Ta :)

(and before anyone says contact moduslink, trying to get information from them is nigh on impossible)

Technically yes it would be licenced to the machine that was returned, although it would still validate and install on another machine quite happily with nobody knowing either way.

Is that just a general rule for OEM copies though?

Exactly what media/licence do you get via the Express Upgrade? Full OEM, OEM upgrade etc.?

If it can be installed on any single machine then I am tempted to continue with the order and save it for the future.

From what I've been told, you get a standard OEM copy of Vista and your XP key is disabled. There isn't an OEM upgrade btw ;)

Like I said, technically it'd only be licenced for the machine you returned, but nobody would be able to tell, so you'd be able to install it on one other machine without any issues.

Ah right, thanks for the info :)

Will just continue with the order I think, if they ever start distribution :p

technicaly that is not true, since it is a new os, you would get a new authenticity sticker with the new os, once you applied that to the new computer laptop, it would be then fully legal, in compliance with terms and conditions, since the sticker has to be appied to the computer/laptop it is installed on it.

No, under the terms of the Express Upgrade, it must be installed on the computer it was intended for.

you siad yourself its an oem software they send, since they are sending you a new os, where the sticker is placed is the computer it is liscened on.
so not breaching anything, not to mention if microsoft did check not that they would, as long as the sticker was on the said computer/laptop nothing would be siad... anyhow, btw that information came from microsoft themselves in a telephone convo i had with them. they siad as long as you are complying wiht the oem licesnse, wich you are, they also siad they do not store any record of the cd ect or the new licesnese they send you, as it comes from ireland, and it is randomly sent, ie the version they send, they do not specificly reserve a version for you, so once it is registered and activated, you take on the oem licesense the same as if you purchased it from a etailer....

anybody brought an acer laptop recently? did u take up on the offer of the vista upgrade?

did u do it via e-mail? or fax? or telephone?

They are not sending you a new OS, they are sending you a Vista OEM licence as part of a upgrade scheme and therefore are bound by the replacement terms.

And that was from some literature I got sent from MS.

If they ever send it at all,

:( bunch of muppets, believe they have even admitted they didnt expect the take up of the new os to be as big as it is lol.

What did they expect when a lot of companies (hp, ibm and more) are offering it for free???

Completely mucked up now.

Checked my order again. now saying proof of purchase required, and now please allow 4-6 weeks from receipt of proof of purchase for shipping lol.

Modus are a complete joke. If you ever receive your upgrade feel free to send it here lol. Would be nice if i could get one. :(

No change here after re-emailing my documents. Might risk giving them a call over the weekend to see if they have actually received anything.

is the upgrate meant to be free?
I paid 16 quid i think for the upgrade, but dont know if i claim this back later on?

I'm hoping that the version supplied does not de-activate the previous licence.....built a few systems for people of late and one guy in particular specifically wanted MCE 2005 (and not Vista !) so I kept the coupon (express upgrade) and used it myself :D ....but am now starting to think that this may 'damage' his MCE validity.....assuming Microsoft really are being that careful on Product Key (de)activation.....
