G'day folks,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma, I pre-ordered a GPU back on the 1st Dec, I was told by support that they 'expected' them in on the 9th Jan only to be told yesterday that there's still no estimated time of arrival at the moment.

The card I ordered is the XFX Mercury Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Gaming Edition RGB 16GB. Now here's my dilemma, do I wait for the re-stock or do I cancel my order and go with either the XFX Quicksilver or Swift variants or would I be better off going either PowerColor or Sapphire.

How important is it to have a 3 x 8 pin power connector vs 2 x 8 pin in this age of power hungry parts? The reason I went for the XFX Mercury was because of the 3 x 8 pin power for peace of mind really, also no interest in overclocking as those days are over ;).

I'm at the age now where this will be my final build and I'm only a light gamer (non AAA games) and would like to keep the cost to between £650 - £700.

The 9070XT isn't the kind of card to be worrying about 3x8pin power delivery, especially if as you stated its only going to be running at stock clocks, so i'd discount that as a reason not to go with a 2x8pin card straight away.

Powercolor & Sapphire are better brands than XFX, IMO. Both OEMs have been tight with AMD for years and have consistently delivered the best AIB cards out there when it comes to AMD GFX cards.

IMO, life's too short, unless you have some of attachment to this XFX Mercury card (aesthetics?) then I'd just cancel the pre-order and get a readily available card.

Having looked at the warranty thread rankings, I don’t think I’ll ever be buying an XFX:

Have had 3 sapphire cards now and they would be my choice moving forward but I’ve never owned a Powercolor so am biased in that recommendation. Both Powercolor and Sapphire seem to have better CS judging from the above thread.

Had powercolor and many sapphire in the house. never an issue with any apart from my nitro 9070XT where one fan was broken and the cooling compromised. OC replaced it and its perfect.

I know the nitro has a stupid 12VHPWR connector but I just can't resist the RGB or design

As above, I'd be leaning toward Sapphire or Powercolor for AMD (although if that warranty thread is up to date then it suggests that Gigabyte are better to deal with.... not sure how up to date though as it makes no mention of Aourus, which I think are still 4yr warranty).

My Sapphire Pulse 7900XT is only 2x8pin and around the same TDP as the 9070XT - I've seen it drawing 320-350W regularly without any issues and according to the monitoring, has ocasionally hit 500W in short bursts! (way over spec for 2x8pin, but it didn't crash or melt :P ).... It's also quite impressively quiet for a card of that power - I'm not overly fussy but can't say I've ever really thought "Oh, that's annoyingly loud" while gaming :D

As for the Sapphire models, I think I've read the Pure uses better fan bearings than the Pulse, so with them both at the same price, and if you're ok with a white card, would be the one I'd probably opt for.

Most brands make a variety of good and bad products within their line up. There is no single brand that makes only good products or only bad products.

I would go for any brand mentioned in this thread, as long as the warranty is decent. A lot of people like the Sapphire Nitro range of GPUs because they used higher quality VRAM NAND and had a better VRM so could overclock nicely but they are significantly more expensive than the Pulse and you won't notice a difference between them.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,387.97 (includes delivery: £7.99)

TL;DR

Looks like my luck has run out with OC, I received my 'new' GPU on the 16th (Friday) and it looks like I've either been sent a returned item (by accident) or an open box item (by accident).

When I took the GPU box out of the packaging box, the first thing I noticed was a torn flap on the GPU box and an already opened/cut seal. I took the GPU out of the static bag which also looked to have been opened before and inspected the card.

There's a scratch on the PCB where the card un-locks from the Motherboard, the PCB where it connects to the Motherboard PCIE slot also looks slightly damaged although I could be wrong. It had no protective plastic covering on either the fan shroud or backplate, there were smudge marks and what looked like smudged finger print marks all over.

The back plate where it screws into the case is also bent.

There was no documentation in the box, neither was there a GPU support thing (if it comes with one that is).

I haven't installed it into my PC mainly because I don't want to be accused of causing the already 'damaged'? GPU to be damaged (if that makes sense). I sent in an RMA request the day it arrived (four days ago) and not had a response yet, but they do say these things can take up to ten days which I don't have a problem with.

Hopefully this can be resolved quickly as I have a new PC without a GPU. I have bought all the components from OC over the past couple of months without any problems and spent around 2.5K. I know that isn't a lot of money to some but for me it is and I cannot afford to buy another GPU in the mean time.

The RX 9070 XT is rated at around 300W, so 2x8pin would be enough
The ones that usually come with 3x8pin are overclocked ones, usually rated to 350W or more.

That's pretty shocking, hopefully OCUK are not trying to send out B-Grade as new! How can a ripped and opened package get dispatched for a new order. Someone has messed up!

Straight up RMA, that’s not new. Anyone would be disappointed with that thing turning up.

I hope they can replace it with an actual new card.

sorry to hear that op but sadly ocuk have really gone downhill the last couple of years. i hope you get sorted but i fear you'll be jumping through hoops for the next few weeks. how'd you pay? if on a cc i'd be tempted to just initiate a charge back.

They open random boxes out of a batch to test and see if they're ok.
I'd contact CS, they should be fine with you installing it to see if it works ok. It may undervolt really well so I'd test it before sending it back.
I sent back a perfectly good nitro plus ages ago and the replacement didn't undervolt anywhere near as good. I learnt from that. I'd check to see if it should come with a sag bracket.

I hope they don't. There's no way I'm installing that damaged GPU into my new setup, looks like I'll still have to wait for CS to get back to me again.
