canceling rent before moving in

Hi.

Is it ok to cancel moving into a property to rent?

So far i have only put down a deposit and have not signed the proper contract yet but something has developed and cant move and commit to it anymore.

Perfectly ok. You might lose some or all of your deposit but that should be all.

A lot of Letting agencies ask for a deposit to hold the property, rather than a full on months rent deposit before any paperwork is even thought about.

You might lose some of your deposit unless it's already lodged with the Deposit Protection Scheme.

From any decent agency you'd get a receipt of some sort, along with T&Cs for eventualities like cancellation

A receipt is a given but you were talking about contracts. Either way these deposits have been non refundable from the last few agencies I've dealt with so a receipt doesn't really make a difference.
