right, i took out insurance for a mobile i no longer have. and would like to cancel said insurance. but i cant find the paperwork. if i were to cancel the direct debit, what would happen? would they just take it that i dont want insurance, or would i get nasty men coming round?

It might be common courtesy to write them a letter, but bugger that, I just cancelled the direct debit when I noticed they'd started charging me for it, haven't had any comeback yet and this was 4 months ago.
