Anyone else really hate it? I wouldn't mind as much if the 'laughter' didn't stop so abruptly so it sounds retarded...how is it even controlled? A scale ranging from 'polite laughter' to 'hysterical' with a button pressed accordingly?

most of it is just cut from old live shows, so it fits those jokes but not the ones it's played on.

It's annoying when the actors cant tell how long the laugh is so carry on talking.

Thats funny actually, because I was watching that last night, and I noticed the canned laughter more than anything on that.
Its so easy to notice because, if you are British at least, the humour is so painfully forced. Its just really really poor. I'm suprised its being shown on UK TV.

What I want to know is why it exists at all. I don't need some pleb trying to hint at me when its time to laugh. If its funny, I'll laugh.

Problem is these days, that 9 time out of 10, its just not funny :(

I don't mind it on shows that are actually funny, such as Seinfeld.

However, some shows (Hope & Faith for example) use it to get laughs, but it just makes the show even worse.

Because if other people laugh, you are more inclined to laugh. You feel secure that what you have witnessed is funny.

Just no.

If I want to laugh, I'll laugh regardless of if anyone else is or not.

And I certainly won't laugh because some canned moron farm is being played at me.

Not only is canned laughter utterly retarded in its volume (in the sense of times used, not audible volume), but also used at utterly innapropriate times just to try and make some garbage writer's unfunny joke not seem quite the abortion it actually was.

Canned laughter actually stops me from laughing

Spot on.

Weird, i was just thinking about this last night, tbh i wouldn't mind it so much if the volume of it was quieter, there was less of it and it wasn't so abrupt like you say, as background noise it wouldn't be so bad but its loud and in your face, sometimes it just puts me off even watching.
