Cannon 1100D ? Accompanying daylight glassware?

Ok, I'm considering upgrading Sandrine's Olympus 800 thingy to a full SLR - two problem are that it saves in jpeg and can't control it's shutter.

Now I have astro photography kit but when it comes to daylight photography I'm lost.. I know the 1100D is a good camera for night time and offers good daytime performance.. so what about lenses for daytime use?

You're talking to someone that uses 670mm f/6.38 (and 1340mm) at full open, focused at infinity all the time with exposures from 0.00001sec through to 20 minutes.. so all this 50mm malarky is a bit odd..

I suppose I'm after a lense that does everything - macro through to lanscape..

I know from experience that it's better to have a good chunk of glass (the 670mm is an APO and has a flat field of view).. so in terms of shooting people, flowers, and larger landscapes. This is why I've not mentioned budget..

So a lens that has zero CA, coma etc - image stabilisation (to help her with hand held shots). I'm not sure if you get terms of apochromatic etc with daylight lenses

I suppose I need to know what focal length etc works best, a good fast lens would also help.

Failing that - a good book on lens selection?

I see what you did there

The reason for going cannon is that the camera can be computer controlled (and better low light performance). Reading up on the lenses, it seems you day folk have a lot of coma etc depending on the f-stop used.

I'm going on what she likes photographing - for a present, but I suppose it's better to let her make the selection.
