hi, just been to sort a friends work computer out for him

Running Win 98

Chrome was messed up and had a notice on it mentioning something along the lines of chrome is no longer supported with this hardware. so uninstalled that.

Using IE (with latest update)

can access bbc news, lycos, yahoo, many other websites. BUT cannot get onto google & hotmail for some reason. Just comes up with a screen saying check internet connection etc.

rebooted router, flushed DND, cleared cookies, checked any blocked sites, nothing in there. Still wont get into google.

Do not know why this is. Maybe someone can shed some light on it for me please.

Thank you

What happens if you ping google.co.uk in cmd?

Try changing the DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 ?

Windows 98 though. If somebody asked me to look at a Win98 PC I'd just say no :p

I would suggest you dont go on the internet with a 17 year old operating system.

Do Windows 98 machines have a host file? Might be worth checking that if one is present as I imagine a 98 machine isn't secure so it could have been altered by some malicious software.

You say latest update for IE, but which version exactly? Can you go higher than IE8 on 98?

Considering no security updates for windows 98 since I can't remember when I'm not sure going online at all is a good idea.

But, I believe if you disable cookies all together it might work. . . .

Not that it's any help to you, but I remember trying to fix a friend's PC with an issue like this, and I never did solve it. Every website in the world would load, except one particular one. IE steadfastly refused to load it one day (after working for weeks), but other browsers worked fine. Tried all kinds and never did get to the bottom of it. I just told them to stick to a proper browser and that was that. :p

The real reason for my reply though is to ask what on earth they are still using a Win 98 machine for? I'm genuinely curious. If it's just web/email/whatever they'd be better off putting a super light Linux distro on there and having done with it. At least it'd get updates and security patches.

How does the PC connect to the Internet? If it's a work PC then it might be via proxy which needs to be configured correctly in the browser.

I believe it's actually IE6, you know, the worst version ever. :p Should still be use it though and load said webpages although they might not look right. HTTPS authentication could also be the cause to which all you can do is use a newer browser or just upgrade the OS altogether.

I don't think you can go higher then IE6 on windows 98 which is likely to be the issue since I know that google defaults to a secure connection and I know that some sites don't work with older versions of IE anymore.
