Hi all my friend is currently with TalkTalk, he as just brought a Belkin wireless router and a wireless laptop, we hav hard cabled the router to the main PC through a RJ45 but we cannot access the router, even when I do a ipconfig in CMD it does not pick it up, the network connection icon in the icon tray says limitted or no connectivity, what could this be ?

Could be DHCP is off on the router or that the network cable is faulty, is there a link light when its plugged in? Have you tried a repair in Network settings?

You could try a reset of the router ( I don't believe your netgear - if it's the DG834 from another thread has a reset button ) - unplug the power cable for 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

Other than that, as above, you need to try to repair the connection. In ipconfig is there an IP address for your PC at all, ie a 169 address?

Sounds like the ethernet cable is duff. Might also be worth switching off the wi-fi on the laptop in case of some kind of conflict. You should be able to see the 'wired' connection indicator on the front pannel of the router if the physical connection is ok.
Some Belkin routers have a reset button on the rear panel which is accessible using a pin or something as small. You should look at the manual on the website to establish how to restore factory defaults. Often done by removing router's power and holding in the reset for 20 seconds or so.
All good fun - isn't it?

silly question, but is the router definately at 192.168.2.1?

does seem quite strange that its on 192.168.2.1, unless youve changed it of course. most routers by default are on 192.168.0.1 or 1.1 or something along those lines.

Hi Guys,
the following is straight out of the Belkin Manual.
1. IP Address
The “IP address” is the internal IP address of the Modem Router.
The default IP address is “192.168.2.1”.

Might just be a 'Belkin' thing:rolleyes:

is the PC set to obtain an ip address automatically? try manually setting an ip address (192.168.2.2 for example) for the moment, jsut so you can get onto the router configuration page to check if DHCP is enabled.

prolly best if you choose an IP which will never be used by the DHCP(or outside its range!) for example 192.168.2.100 or something.

subnet mask will either be 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0 (more than like the first one)
default gatewat - 192.168.2.1
