Cannot backup windows 7 PC to external drive

Hi all

Hope someone can sort this out for as it's driving me mad! I have just cloned my 120gb SSD to a new 256gb SSD. All is running fine.

I am now trying to backup my C drive (the SSD) to my external 1TB Samsung drive. After about 70% of the backup running the backup fails. This happens with windows 7's own backup program and with Macrium Reflect free edition. Any ideas as I'm stumped......

Does it happen when you do it from a macrium live cd?

I always prefer offline backups

Now that I haven't tried..... just surprised that windows 7 backup won't back up its own system!

If try a chkdsk. If it used to work and no longer does, might be something funny going on.

You should use ddrescue to image that sucker just in case it is about to fail.

You can use http://www.hdtune.com/ to check the SMART data & scan the surface.

Checkdisc ran ok. Now when I run MACRIUM REFLECT, the backup of my C drive to my external SSD starts then stops as with message "write operation failed - The system cannot find the file specified". This I find a little confusing as its backing up what is there on the C drive surely?!?!

mmmm, working fine now...... not sure why as I have done nothing different to my previous attempts......
