My internet on a friends laptop that i had jusrrecently formated doesnt work.

the internet connecton says it is limited or no conectivity. Then i try repair my connection, and an error comes up saying it cannot renew my ip address??

I then tried ipconfig/renew in command prompt and i get this error

An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request timed out.

and from here on i am totally clueless....

just checked in device manager and it says there is no driver for my PCI Modem (is that 56k? if so im not botherd about this driver) and my network cntroller. Im asuming the network controller is the thing thats not letting me connect to the internet.. Ive looked on the IBM website (as its an IMB thinkpad r50e) and I cant find a network controller driver..

Specs:
1.4 celeron M cpu
248mb ram
win xp home edition
service pack 2

type in IPconfig /release first, which will release the IP.

then type ipconfig /renew.

You don't have to release first, just renewing will be sufficient.

If you're getting errors about not being able to find a DHCP server, then start looking there. What device on your network is set to dish out IP addresses?

Ok, just did 'ipconfig' in cmd and it says the following:

Description: Intel Pro/100 VE Network connection on
Physical Address: 00-0A-E4-3A-FB-F1
DHCP Enabeld : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabeld : Yes
IP Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0
Defult Gateway - nothing here
DHCP Server 255.255.255.255

Can someone tell me whats up?? and why is my IP address 0.0.0.0 ....

ok i just reset my modem and i got the following to come up...

Description: Intel Pro/100 VE Network connection on
Physical Address: 00-0A-E4-3A-FB-F1
DHCP Enabeld : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabeld : Yes
IP Address 162.254.142.86
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0

still no interconnection though . . .

I take it you mean 169.254.x.x? That is Windows telling you that it can't get an IP address from a DHCP server so it has assigned itself one.

Like I said earlier, the problem is with your DHCP server. What device on your network is supposed to be giving out IP addresses?

ohh haha lmao, sorry, straight from the modem to the laptop..
But i dont see how I can get this PC to wotk on the internet, but when itry connectiong the laptop it doesnt work..
