Cannot Copy File

I'm using Windows XP Professional and I'm backing up all my files to my external HDD so I can install Windows 7, all files and folders are transferred except from a folder which gives me this error,

Sorry for posting in the wrong section, I can't seem to take ownership of the folder as I don't have the Security tab and Unlocker doesn't work,

Reboot to Safe mode and choose Admin account.

I'm the admin and there's only one account on the computer

In XP that is true but try the Safe Mode option and you will see once you choose Admin its looks different, try moving file then.

Assuming you're not using whole disk encryption:

Boot to Windows PE or a Linux LiveCD/LiveUSB. You shouldn't have any problems copying files then, unless the disk itself is failing.

You could probably also check for file system errors before doing that

Is your external drive FAT32 and your XP install is NTFS?

If so, you have a file over the FAT32 file size, which is 2GB.



Solution?

Copy all files from the external drive to another folder
Format the drive as NTFS*
Copy the files back to it.


*If you need to use the external drive on a Mac, then I'd format it as exFAT
