I`m in the market for a flashgun but am torn between the SB-400 and the SB-600. I think the 400 would be ideal as it would be great to be able to bounce flash and it can be had for as little as 80 quid. The only downside is that whilst it has vertical tilt, it cannot pivot so no ceiling bounce for portrait shots.

On the other hand, the 600 would be fantastic and more versatile BUT at a much higher price. Found online for about 185 quid.

Do any of you have any experience of the sb-400 ?

Just cant decide lol

sb-400 is a waste of money, i've been tempted, but i know in the back of mind its just not worth it. Save for the sb-600 :)

It can be had for a lot less than £185 as well.

Can the SB-400 operate in wireless mode given a suitable commander unit or not?

nope, it can do nothing more than the built in flash 50% of the time, wireless is certainly out, the SB600 is worth every penny and it really encourages you to try things out and be a bit more creative..

Hmm you`re pretty much confirming what was in the back of my mind if i`m honest. Guess i was hoping for some wonderous tales of how great the 400 was lol.

Thanks all for the push, have found an sb-600 for 145 +p&p so may very well grab one soon :-)

You can get it for 70 quid, its compact, can bounce. Good value imo. If later you upgrade you still can use it.

Practical Photography did a review of flashguns a while back.

The Sigma 500 DG didn't do too well, only 3 stars while the SB600 got 4. The other one they mentioned was the Metz 54 AF-1 also getting 4 stars. Can't speak from personal experience though as I don't have a flashgun yet although I'll be going down the SB600 route when I do
