Ive had some mixed reactions from guys I have asked about which mobo to use in my new build. Ive been looking at one of the following, but cannot decide which will suit best:

- Asus P5E Premium WiFi
- Asus Rampage Extreme
- Foxconn BlackOps
- Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6

Running a QX9770 with two 4870 X2's (roll on Thursday) and a heavy dose of overclocking, and fully watercooled of course.

One friend has suggested I stay away from RoG boards, whereas another says that Foxconn normally only make cheap boards and that their first foray into high end ones wont be so good.

Any recommendations for RAM to go with the board would be great also, as they are the last two parts ive yet to decide 100% on.

Regards

That would be the one I was going for if I decided to stay with DDR2 actually. I take its deffo not worth going for DDR3 and the Extreme then ? :P

I have the Black Opps mobo, iv been a gigabyte fan since i started building/oc computers and i am not dissapointed with the foxconn black opps board. There are hundreds of overclocking options in the bios. im on water aswell so i will see what clocks i can get soon :D

What about these DFI mobos. I have the LT model and can confirm it is an amazing board with loads of options. UT model only difference is it has a Copper chipset heatsink which covers NB + SB but not worth the extra £30 especially if you are using water.

I've used all four and the Asus Rampage Extreme is the best imho. The P5E has to much stuff nailed onto it, Its about as stable a earthquake, Blackops is a good board but its very picky about ram and the BIOS's are still poor and buggy, Meh i've never liked gigabyte boards :)

Get the Asus Rampage Extreme and the 2000Mhz Corsair Dominator, I had it running stable at over 2200Mhz in my board.

How do you reckon that? The P5E is a cut down Maximus Formula so how has it got "too much stuff nailed to it". I have had this board since a couple of weeks after launch and while earlier bios were buggy they have been great since 502. I have never had a problem with this board and i am even running PC2 8500 Ballistix which other people complain about. I have had a Q6600 to 3.8Ghz, a E8500 to 4.5Ghz and now my E6600 to 3.8Ghz. I am running a 1900fsb and have even been up to a 2200 fsb and it never crashes. In fact it is rock solid stable. Best board i have ever had.

OP, personally with Nehalem just around the corner, if you can't wait then i would be looking at a DDR3 board so that you can at least carry the ram over when you next upgrade. The Rampage Extreme would also be top of my list.

Yeah my P5E has been absolutely perfect since I got it, with the exception of a compatibility issue with my Corsair RAM at the time (worked on 0107 and 0201 BIOS revs but anything later than that caused instability and MemTest errors) but after changing my RAM it's been rock solid. Part of the reason I bought the P5E is because I didn't need all the useless extras (to me) on the Maximus Formula so yes, it's a cut down board, I don't understand how it can have too much "nailed to it".

I've got my P5E flashed to the Rampage Formula BIOS and it's still perfect. I'd probably go as far as to say it's the best board I've ever had also.

OT but what happened to the E8500?

P5E Deluxe... Great board... Hard to get hold of tho... And price is about £30 cheaper than the Rampage formula... And you can flash the bios with the RF bios... (I think)

That's your own fault TBH, 1.45v is my (and others) safe Max on Good Air.

More importantly what was your VTT ?.

We have been through this loads of times. Cpu PLL was 1.6v (min is 1.5v), fsb termination was 1.30v (min is 1.20v). This board does'nt need lots of volts. Did i blame anyone else? No! I was one of the first with one of these and i learnt the hard way. Anyway, he asked me what happened to it and i told him. I was'nt complaining. There are still loads of people using voltages of over 1.5v and even over 1.6v, yet when i make a comment that <1.45v is max for these cpu's i basically get told i imagined it and to take a hike. Fine, if they want to fry them that's up to them.
