cannot do CHKDSK on C: (vista)

Been having some file system problems in vista. Some programs have reported corrupt files.

When I schedule a chkdsk for c: and reboot, the chkdsk just says that it cannot gain access to the volume and quits. Vista then continues boot-up.

Is there some good third party utility I can use to perform low level disk maintenance? I don't mind if it is a commercial product. Doesn't have to be free. I just want it to be good.

I tried booting with the vista recovery disk. It does not give any option to simply check the hard drive. Seems to just have a few very broad options.

Have you tried running Check disk from within Safemode? (see link below under Using chkdsk in a Command Prompt).

Another option is to run the system file checker which is explained below...

I would forget about 3rd party tools in the meantime until you try the above.

Thanks for help! The first option of running chkdsk from safe mode worked. It fixed a dozen or so file system errors. Second run of chkdsk found no problems.

I don't know what caused this, so I hope the problems stop.
