Hi guys,

I legally purchased my copy of Windows 7, direct from the Microsoft online store.

Sadly my RAID array has failed and although I have a comprehensive backup routine meaning that I've lost barely anything, sadly the one file I did lose was...

... you guessed it, my Windows 7 ISO.

No problem, I'll just log back into the Windows store and download it again.

Sorry,

It is too late to download this file. You were allowed to download within 30 days.

Seriously?!

What am I supposed to do now?

No wonder people pirate stuff, if I ws a software pirate it'd be half way downloaded by now!

That does suck and makes the cloud a little less useful.

I assume you still have your Windows key so it's just a case of getting hold of the ISO again or DVD?

I'm sure someone could lend you their DVD. ;)

All those links are 404 not found.

By staggering co-incidence I noticed an unmarked DVD on my shelf. I put it into my laptop and found it....

..is my Windows 7 disc

Lucky escape but I think the point still stands - why do they do things like this? Surely they want to be encouraging as many people as possible to buy legal software, screwing people over like this isn't going to encourage them to buy legal again in the future is it?

This is why I keep multiple backups of my Windows 7 DVD but I have also made it a AIO which has every version of Windows 7 on it for both x86 and x64.

And what if he has the ultimate edition?

then he would have said so. :/

besides, you can install any version from any disk (bar enterprise) just by removing a file. search the forums for "ei.cfg" - the subject has been done to death.

Personally, I'd have taken that opportunity to download the latest version with pre-integrated SP1.

An ISO is an ISO at the end of the day. Nothing wrong with downloading it again. As long as your not the one distributing it.

He could have Torrented it.

Nothing criminal about downloading a copy of OS media.

Not going to comment on the secondline as I don't know enough about it, but torrenting would almost certainly be prohibited as he wouldn't be able to make sure that everyone he was uploading to was entitled to download it, even if he was.

Really shouldn't be an issue with torrenting it as you have a valid version of it yourself. Having a backup of an ISO is completely fine regardless of your source if you own a valid license key.

By the way, there are plenty of torrent management programs that you can block seeding/uploading, or are designed purely to download without seeding at all. Google is easy to use.

Not at all. The ownership is linked to the licence, not the media. Nothing criminal about 'distributing' that, what would be is selling it and/or dodgy keys.

The EULA (I believe) states something about the media but that would be a civil matter, not a criminal one. Obtaining media would be fair use assuming you OWNED a licence and required media to install it.

Ive got a full library of windows install discs from the torrent network, So useful being in the IT industry having all the discs to hand.
