Cannot find a phone to replace my 2g Iphone

At present I have an Iphone 2G which I have owned since the price cut last year. I run it unlocked on a T-mobile Solo 15 contract with Web'n'Walk.

I wanted something with HSDPA support as my Iphone will only work at GPRS speed on T-mobile as they do not support EDGE connections :(

Had a play with a Nokia 5800, it is not in the same league as the iphone, I have symbian on my 6120classic which I use as a modem/backup phone and I understand it well but it felt so clunky on the 5800. Phone felt very low rent when compared with the iphone.

I don;t like the G1, had a go with the Blackberry 8900 curve but again it only supports Edge so on T-mobile it only runs at GPRS speed!! I did have a play with the E71, which felt good and solid, screen was good, not sure about the cramped qwerty keyboard though.

I definately need HSDPA, WIFI, 3G, built in Radio, IMAP support and good Browser.

Help!!

I'm loath to say it but from your dislike for everything non-iphone, the 3g iphone seems to be what you're after(bar the built in radio bit).

I would suggest the touch hd, xperia x1 or similar but seems like the wm interface wouldn't be upto your 'standards'.

Blackberry Storm?

I'm in the same situation as you and that's what I've pretty much settled on, had a BB pearl previously and loved it.

Maybe wait for the Palm Pre?

I'd go for the Xperia. I've had mine for nearly a month and it's honestly the best phone I've ever owned. Build quality is superb, it's really quite small for the full qwerty keyboard which makes writing anything a doddle. It's got HSDPA, WIFI, 3G, free google maps with GPS navigation, IMAP support and comes preloaded with Opera browser which is excellent.

If you read reviews everywhere will say it is slow, which it is, but ONLY out of the box. After about an hour of tweaking mine was running very nicely. Think of it as a new PC, it's gonna be slow until you get all the rubbish off :)

Edit - It's got a superb built in radio too.

The 3G Iphone does seem like the logical step but I want to stay with T-mobile and I am not too sure on the reliability of the Yellowsn0w unlock. I could get a 3g Iphone for £350ish on payg, then sell my mint condition 2g Iphone for about £150 but the unlock concerns me and not being able to upgrade software.

I wouldn't say I am an Iphone obsessive but the GUI is streets ahead of symbian. I have used winmo 5 and that wasn't too bad. Still have the HTC Monet/ Lobster 700V phone but I just use it as a DAB radio now, it is still the only phone so far to be made with a DAB radio built into it, simply was ahead of its time.

wait for the nokia n97? i am stuck as i have the n95 and there really sin't anything better at the moment that justifies an upgrade. annoyingly the n97 has just been delayed to june which could be delayed once again.

Blackberry Storm is Vodafone only and doesn't have WIFI which is a big thing I use everyday.

Will definitely look at the Sony Xperia further though.

What didn't you like about the G1 out of interest?

The lack of built in radio, and also the swivel/slide keyboard idea, I could see some slackness/hinge problems further down the line. Not bad phone really just not to my tastes,.

Will probably stick with my iphone for a while yet and see what comes along in the near future. But the E71 does look promising though.

Doesn't solve the radio problem, but when the HTC Magic comes out that may solve some of the issues you have with the G1 build wise - which I totally agree with you on.

I have no problem typing on my E71 despite having sausage fingers. It took me a couple of days to stop making mistakes but it didn't take long.

It's also got a corrective text option (ala the iPhone) if you do find yourself making mistakes. Personally, I've turned this option off though.

Rang up T-mobile upgrades on 150 this morning have ordered an E71 on flex-t with free web'n'walk. I can try it for 7 days and then return it if I don't like it. The phone seems to have everything I need, gps, Hsdpa, radio, imap, decent keyboard and the flex-t contract look very good. I am getting it on tuesday so I will see how it goes.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys.

I'm in the same position as Mammalian, n95 atm, and I've decided that the only phone that will make me happy for a minimum of a year looks to be the N97. Looks the sex and has everything a person might want from a top of the range phone.

no.. no no no

no no no no no and then a bit more no.

I have an iphone and work gave me a storm.

Suffice to say I still have the iphone and now have a bold.

The storm is easily the worst touchscreen I've ever used.. so so frustrating to use purely because of the OS.. its amazing on my bold to the point where I'd consider getting another one to replace my iphone but not the storm thats currently sat on my desk going nowhere because its cack.

Not an isolated review either, there are 5 of us here who got storms and we've all either not stopped moaning about it or have already gotten rid.

If you've got a pearl get a bold NOT a storm, trust me!

I've been through many phones in my searchover the past few months. Long time windows mobile user. Wife got a BB Bold. Stopped my search in it's tracks.

For my useage it is awesome. Doesn't crash, reliable wifi...... everything that I wanted my WinMo phones to be (but weren't)

Definitely stay away from the BB Storm...its a nice device but the software just lets it down bigtime. Unless you have the patience of a saint, id stay away from it. Sadly imo BB tried to compete with the iphone with the Storm but failed miserably.
Hopefully the new Storm will put things right...problem with the storm is that your hardcore BB user uses the trackball a lot and because the storm didnt have that...a lot of BB users found it difficult to get on with. Saying that there are newer software releases, which i have heard makes the storm slightly better. But BB really shouldnt have pushed the Storm out so quick.

If theres one BB id recommend, it would be the Bold...its an awesome device and works brilliantly well. Ive had mine since Dec and i couldnt see myself without one now...
