Cannot get an old router to give internet access, even though it finds the connection

So, my parents are using the platinum AOL package at home, and after building them a Vista PC they needed a non driver modem/router so using my old d-link dsl-504. Basically I've set it up using all the default settings and using the IP address login, I get the settings shown above, I personally have no idea about networking really, so any advice to get it working would be a godsend.

It sees the connection and the speed it should receive, but will not allow any internet access. All firewalls are turned off etc so no reason for it not to work that I can think of.

Thank you

I think someone mentioned to me that AOL use PPPoE for authentication, hence syncing at the right speed, but not having internet access. Try changing the authentication method.
Tried it, didn't work. I talked to the AOL online help (who are generally useless) and they sent me the default settings for all routers, which say to use PPPoA VC mux, and then tried to pawn me off to D-link online help. Really annoying now as I need it to work by the end of the weekend.

Thank you for your time

Well I contacted aol again, and was sent the following info for default settings, which are very different from the ones on their website. Also password/username are not incorrect:

Settings:
Connection Protocol: PPPoA (VCMUX or VCBASED)
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
(VPI/VCI): 0,38
Authentication: CHAP

The Following settings are set to automatic or get automatically from ISP,
On some routers you may have to leave these fields blank:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit): 1400
MRU (Maximum Receive Unit): 1400

Username: your [email protected]
Password: your password

Trying to work out how to change the MTU settings, but I cannot find anything on the router settings when I log in using its IP, help would be appreciated. Thanks
At this very moment the connection is using a BT voyager v105 adsl modem, but due to vista requirements I need a router thats ethernet using.
