Cannot install dot net framework

I am having major problems getting the dot net framework to install. It has been installed previously but will not update. Nor does it uninstall properly.

I obtained the dot net framework cleanup tool, which was written by an MS employee. It also fails to remove all traces of the software properly.

I have tried running the 3.5 online installer, and also the 3.0 and the 3.5 SP1 redistributable packages. They all fail.

I need it to be installed for certain software to function - please tell me there is a way I can make this happen without needing to reinstall the operating system! :/

tbh, i've never seen it fail to install.. (hundreds of pcs)

i'd consider formatting, and installing it straight off

Strange you've never heard of it, google for it and there are huge numbers of people who cannot install it, or uninstall it successfully. Problems date back years, right up to the present.

I get this when trying the 3.5 redist installer:

I tried this solution the other day but it didn't work:

I've had this before DD, I think I got round it by deleting a load of windows updates & then doing it manually, Try it & let me know then if it don't work I'll put my thinnking cap back on.
If I remember correctly the windows updates I deleted had nowt to do with .net but removing them triggered the auto update which I stopped & did the .net first & in the proper order. It's summit to do with the way it auto downloads in the wrong order that messes it up.

I have about 50 updates and it would probably be just as quick to reinstall Windows

What's it say in the log?

It has hundreds of lines of text, if not thousands. Here are some of them, up to the most recent.

Right the cleanup tool 'succeeds' (allegedly) if you select the individual versions from the menu, rather than choosing to cleanup all of them at once.

However, the installer of 3.0 or 3.5 still both fail in exactly the same way.

This is a real pain in the bottom...

Okay will do.

I also tried installing it in safe mode (predictably it doesn't like that) and with the 'administrator' account (rather than my regular account which is 'an' administrator account rather than 'the' one) in case my existing account had any issues. Also no go.

I don't think so because the uninstall tool does successfully (it thinks) remove all traces of 3.0 and 3.5. It stops services itself as part of the process.

I have checked the services and there is nothing there which is different to the past when it used to work.

I wish I understood why it is beyond the wit of MS to make a foolproof installer for the .net framework. People have had problems with it for YEARS and the problems have never been fixed!

Very interesting link, thanks - so they reckon I need to install all the previous versions of .NET in sequence, not just jump straight to 3.0 or 3.5! Okay what the hell, I'll give it a try

Aaargh how infuriating.

The cleanup tool reckons it has removed all traces.

Windows installer cleanup tool doesn't list any versions of .NET

Add/remove programs still contains an entry for .NET 3.5 SP1 which when you try to uninstall it, it says you aren't allowed to.

Anyway so I tried running the redist installer for .NET 1.0 as suggested on that page.

Result...

Bah.

Gonna try the other versions next.

Yeah I have done those things already :) It is so weird and seemingly illogical how it doesn't work.

I think with the time I've spent trawling google and trying different things, I could have reinstalled Windows and reconfigured it and all my software by now ;)
