I have tried updating a win 7 installation on a gen 8 microserver and part way through the installation stopped with the message - "Cannot install Windows 10 - "the installation failed in the safe_os phase with an error during replicate_oc operation".

Looks like the issue might be almost anything / everything possibly out of date - e.g. Intel microcode, BIOS, any hardware item for which there is no driver, etc.

Is the HP gen 8 (with original 2014 BIOS) compatible with Windows 10 Version 2004?

Try a wipe and reinstall using usb media creation tool, you can use a windows 7 key to activate windows 10 when ever I have done an in place upgrade it's caused no end of problems.

Well that worked - but now have one unidentified item - "Other Devices" - Base System device. What is this - syas no driver installed?

Any advice please? Thanks, Mel

Here are the list of drivers for the Gen 8 Micro Server.

If you highlight the unknown device, properties what are the Hard IDs? Could identify the device, and driver needed for those. Could be chipset.

No list?

From the ID - turned out to be HP iLo for headless access. I reinstalled the original driver exe file that I had (not win 10) - and the line disappeared - to where I don't know. Remote access via iLo 4 to my other PC still seems to work!

Still trying to understand latest Win 10 changes! Does workgroup still exist?? Can't seem to get name change to stick - sometimes greyed out. Also re networking I can "see" the microserver drives on my "other" PC but with same settings I cannot see my main PC on the microserver. Never did really understand the idiosyncrasies of Windows networking!!

(continued) NB - didn't need to update the BIOS but did need to reinstall the Matrox graphics driver as the generic one installed did not give the correct screen resolution.

Is the device connected to the internet? If it is then hit windows update it should find most of the latest drivers for the hardware and install them automatically.

It is connected and updated Windows. It couldn't update the microserver specific things like the matrox graphics or the iLO driver which windows update didn't know about. iLO is an optional extra. Saves having a monitor / mouse / keyboard connected to the microserver. Provides a web interface. To access the microserver from a pc or Android device.

Rest of drivers ok as installed by the win 10 20H2 install. Mel
