Hi I have a HP Compaq 6720s here with vista basic installed, I want to get rid of it and put windows xp on it. I inserted the XP disc, it ran through the initial setup where it loads the filers for drivers and stuff.

After I press enter to set up windows xp it came up with the following message:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer".

WTF?

Is it because vista is already installed and has done something where you cant install XP over it?

Sounds like it doesn't have the driver to recognise your hard disk controller.

Should be an option to press F6 during the initial text phase of XP setup to let you install the correct driver, but you'll have to have the driver available on a floppy disk to install it.

The other option is to use something like nLite to build a custom XP install CD which you have added the driver to.

This could be an issue for you as the driver has to be loaded via a floppy drive! As you have a laptop your only solution would to slip stream the correct driver using nlite. It's quite easy to use. You just have to figure out what is the correct driver for your controller.

Also if you can get your hand on it, get a newer copy of the XP media, you might find the driver is included on that already so you won't have to mess around with slipstreaming.
