Hi all
I am looking for some advice: My rig is pretty new, not overclocked and has recently been cleaned. The problem is that whenever there seems to be a lot going on graphically, the GPU seems to shut down. The screen goes black, and I get a message that there is no signal coming from the GPU.
The only way to resolve this is a hard boot.
I don't think it's a heating issue as the temps are well within normal ranges. I use a GTX285, and had originally purchased 3 of these, so I swapped the active one out for a new one - same problem. I then purchased a new PSU - I went for an Enermax Revolution 85+. Still the same problem.
I swapped screens out - same problem.
So after some research it was suggested that perhaps the GPU is not getting enough amps from the PSU. Since this case doesn't have anything fancy in it, I have just used the standard supply leads from the PSU - in other words nothing is plugged into any of the spare rails. The GPU has 2 six pin supply adapters, and since the PSU had 2 built-in 6+2 leads, I just used those.
My question is this: is it worthwhile/possible/safe to use one of the 6+2 supply leads for the one socket on the GPU, and use a seperate lead coming off one of the other 12V rails for the other 6 pin socket on the GPU, to try and pull amps off more than one rail for a single card?
I might be talking nonsense here, forgive me as I am not 100% clued up on this.
System spec FYI is:
Core i7 980x @ 2.8Ghz
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
6Gb Corsair Dominator GT
Win 7 64bit
The only other hardware running off this PSU is a Fatal1ty sound card, 2 500Gb Samsung HDDs, and one SSD.
Let me know if you need more info to offer advice - and any effort is appreciated.
Thanks
