So been looking at buying myself an entry dslr. Currently have a Lumix tz18 but would rather skip a bridge as I want to venture into telescopic photography in the near future.

I can get the 100d for £360, possibly more if it comes down in the Bank holiday sales.

Has anyone used one, has one or has an opinion on it. I don't want to spend more than £400 on a first slr.

I have a 100D and can say it is an amazing camera for it's size. I use it as my second body and had purchased it for holidays as it is so light and compact compared to my 5Dii. The quality of photos is excellent for an entry level camera and with the right lens (I have the 15-85mm IS), it's amazingly versatile.

Haven't used that one. I know a couple of people who got one with a 100D and then didn't end up using it in favour of the 18-55 STM kit lens. I think it's down to what you intend to photograph more than anything, for a single lens I prefer a zoom one for versatility personally. If you are used to using prime lenses then the 40mm is a reasonable balance between the 35mm and 50mm range though not as fast being only a 2.8 rather than a 1.8/2.0. For video the STM motor is a benefit over the other primes though.

maybe a idea but save 160 quid and buy a eos m from argos(199 with a free £10 voucher) (ocuk dont sell em ) has a eos 700d sensor in it and takes all eos ef efs lenses with adapter bargain

The 40mm pancake is a lovely lens but I wouldn't want it as my only lens on a crop sensor camera as it's a big long then. Also not sure whether I'd recommend the eos M either as the auto focus on it seems a bit on the slow side in the reviews I've seen but I guess it depends what you'll use it for.

AF was hugely improved via firmware (it was crippled out of the box, which pretty much crippled it's sales) but is still not up there with DSLRs. The native lens selection is poor but you can fit all EF/S lenses via an official adaptor.

It's a lot of camera for the money, I'm (still) considering one myself as I've got some top end Canon lenses.

I would stay clear of the EOS-M because it is discontinued outside Asia. The latest lenses haven't been released in Europe or america.
The 100 is more attractive anyway IMO.

I went with the 100D in the end, just about to order the pancake for it too.

Loving the camera so far and starting to pick up small things when I am out and about with it.

Would a 2nd hand 550D be a better bet than a new 100D? Asking as my Bro wants a DSLR and has handled both.
