I am considering getting a 1D mk II N but I wonder if a new model is due in the near future, does anyone have any info or would anyone care to speculate about the release dates of new models ?

TIA

There will be a new Canon 1 series at some point, when? That's anyone's guess.

Chances are the MkIIn will be the last of the 1.3x crop sports/PJ line and the next 1D model will be the convergence of the 1D and 1Ds, with a full frame sensor and possibly a Nikon style crop mode for high speed shooting. As a result it won't be cheap, probably somewhere between the 1D & 1Ds price points.

The MkIIn is a very capable camera and I wouldn't worry about buying one even with a new model on the horizon, I've been using the plain MkII for almost 2 years now and it'll be a long time before I consider changing it.

There's ALWAYS a new model round the corner.

Like rpstewart I'm using a MkII (non N) and it's fantastic. If you want the N, and it suits your style, just go get it, you won't be disappointed.

Get the N. I also want the N but was hoping for some light to be shared at photonika. To be honest, even with a new model coming out you probably wont consider it due to its high cost. like rpstewert said, the crop feature on a FF camera is gonna come at a mid 4 figure price. Get the N. Its awesome.

It's all speculation really, here is my view based on previous new release timelines and rumours.
I don't think Canon is going to combine the 1Ds and 1D just yet. Having separate studio and sport cameras makes sense. I would guess that Canon will release a new 1Ds MKIII in Feb 2007 and the 1D MKIII in Sept 2007.

If you need a camera now then get the 1D MKIIn, it's a superb camera and will be capable of producing great images for many years to come. Just take a look at the original 1D, it is 5 years old, only has 4MP but photos from it are still stunning.
If you hang around for the next model then you're looking at an approx 10month wait and it (1DMKIII) will probably launch at around £3k, which is around £800 more than the current MKIIn model.

Like you, I was also planning on waiting for a new model, but plumped for the MKIIN back in June when a certain shop began a 10% off online offer.

Fortunately I didn't hang around and got the camera for £2025 literally hours before they altered the terms to say "excluding DSLRs" :)

It's a great camera - and would produce superb photos if I was any good at taking them. Like someone has already said, the next model will be at a premium price until demand drops, so it's probably better to get the 1DMKIIN whilst prices are good.
