Ok I just ordered a 350D and would like to know what is the best memory card to get for it?

Problem looking at minimum 1g please

An idea of what is good or bad about them if you know what be helpful too

Thanks

I got a standard sandisk 2gb for £30 which is quite good, don't worry about buying an Extreme III type thing as the limiting factor will be the camera.

My advice, get as big as you can afford

According to Rob Galbraith's CF database the 350D can make use of the faster cards. Their tests had a standard Sandisk card giveing about 1Mb/s write speed with an Extreme III giving 6Mb/s.

If you're only going to take a single photo then wait a bit before the next one then the standard card will be fine but if you want to shoot in burst mode or at any decent rate in RAW then a standard card is really going to be a problem. The frame buffer on a 350D is pretty small so you need a half decent card to allow it to flush in a sensible time.

I wouldn't be going as far as Extreme IIIs unless you can get a bargain as a result of the Extreme IV launch, Ultra IIs are a good compromise between price and speed. I picked up a few 2Gb ones not so long ago for under £50 a pop.

Thanks. Will have to search around. Are you better off getting online? Do Overclockers do any?

If not can I have a link as I want to make sure it is compatible.

Is yours a 350D?

OCUK do sell some CF cards but they're nothing special either in price or performance. Links to other places are a no-no I'm afraid but I would go for Sandisk cards every time, any CF card will be compatible in theory but there have been known issues with some Lexar cards and Canon DSLRs. No such problems with Sandisk.

And no, I don't use a 350D, I'm a masochist with a "hewn from a solid lump of lead" 1D MkII.

SanDisk Extreme III 2GB CompactFlash
Price £65

Is that a good price?

Do I want the compact one??

Found this - SanDisk Standard SD Card 2GB Is that the one?

Not sure if the 350D takes SD or not, the 5D doesn't so I don't think it can use SD anyway.

CompactFlash is the memory type so it has to be CompactFlash if that is what the camera requires

EDIT: So to sum up as RPStewart has stated the 350D is CF only no you can't use the SD you've quoted

350D is Compact Flash only, it's only when you get up to the 1 series bodies that you can use SD.

1GB extreme 3 = £27.20 at a well know online place.
Can't fall off a horse. Just ordered another one :D

Edit: And the 350D can definately use the speed of the extreme 3. It lets you have silly bursts.

i can confirm this i just got 2 1gb sticks for £30 just dont get them from the camera shop on the highstreets that begins with a J if you look in the catalogue of theres its £112 for a 1gb and £170 for 2gb which is down right theft

I'd recommend getting a few smaller cards rather than one big card, e.g. get 2x 1GB instead of 1x 2GB.

This can be useful because the file system on the cards can become corrupted, and it's better to only lose half your your photos than all of them. Even though there are some good recovery software packages, from my experience, they do not always recover the images properly.

We got a Kingston 2Gb Elite Pro CF card from an online shop (name similar to a well known auction site) for under £40 delivered. Although it is only 50x, it has been fast enough for us, and burst mode works well.

Thought about getting something faster, but this was a good price and it had good reviews.

I have both a 1Gb Extreme III compact flash and a Kingston Elite Pro 1Gb compact flash. Have a look around, wherever you can find the cheapest out of these 2 or a Sandisk Extreme II get any of them, you cannot go wrong with either of those 3 cards.

You will also get a voucher upon receiving your 350d (if bought new) to claim a 256Mb Sandisk (non-highspeed) Compact Flash card for free.
