Canon 400d batteries

Im getting a canon 400d soon and wondering about batteries, for my old camera I had several sets of AA batteries which all seemed to last different lengths of time. Would having two of batteries for the 400d be sufficient for an average afternoon/morning photoing? I know its kind of a hard question to answer because it depends on a lot of things, but how many spares do people carry with them?

Also I'm thinking of getting the battery grip for it, what are peoples opinions and advantages /disadvantages with the grips?

Thanks, the one thing about the camera from testing it, it does feel a little plasticy but its the best I can get for my money so If a grip improves the hold and feel of it, it sounds good
