Canon 400D First Shots (newb) *56K Warning*

Hello everyone :). I just bought a 400D used (but in shockingly great condition), and I thought I'd share a couple of shots I've taken with the 18-55mm kit lens. Couple things I should mention:
  • I'm an absolute 100% noob in this field and today was pretty much my first time holding a DSLR. I've done a bit of reading and I'm familiar with ISO/aperture/shutterspeed.
  • I haven't been able to find a 'Compact Flash' card in any shops, so I'm shooting straight to my MacBook over USB.
Any comments or advice would be awesome. Thanks for looking :).

EDIT: The last two are actually pictures taken on my iPhone 4 that I thought were pretty nice.

I think you've made a great start with the 400D.
#2 and #3 are quite interesting and show you're able to see the beauty of abstract images and have some creativity (which I don't!). Sorry but I can't see the point of #1 even if he is your darling teddy;)

I am sure you will enjoy using your new DSLR. I am still learning with mine.

Love the shots!
Thanks :D. Do you have any 400D shots to share?

Haha, thanks. The bear actually belongs to one of my little nieces :), and the shot was pretty much the first time I figured out how to make the flash pop-up while shooting in manual mode . I suppose it makes more sense in context:

I'm having so much fun with this thing, even though it's tethered to my laptop :D. I can't wait to get outside and try some landscape and nature stuff.

I quite like the second image even with the harsh lighting. Is that the full shot or did you crop it mate?

Really like the third one for some reason.

Keep at it, you're doing well for your first shots! What camera you have isn't really relevant. I started with a 400D and have since graduated to a 40D and 7D but, despite this, my single favourite shot was taken with the 400D.

Thanks mate :D. It's the full shot; none of these have been edited.
Think I was still in bed, with the blinds half open when I took that.

Thanks for the advice. I did a little bit of reading before I bought anything, and the impression I got was the biggest difference comes from the lenses you put on them. Didn't think I'd need features like HD video recording and super fast shutter speeds just yet, so for the price the 400D was perfect for me.

I've been really impressed with the performance of the 18-55mm kit lens as well, though I'd definitely get the more expensive IS/USM/f2.8 version if I could afford it as camera shake is a real problem in low light. Think my next purchase will be a nifty fifty lens :); it seems to produce fantastic photos for the price.

EDIT:
I spotted this in the drinks cabinet at my mums and tried to get some shots of it:

Love that last one.

As for being a cam newb, just keep shooting! It's not like the old days when you'd have to shell out loads of film. Just snap anything and everything, play with the settings etc., and have fun! :)

I've had that great advice ringing in my ears since I read it, and it's been a blast :). With the weather we're having I decided to step outside and try my hand at some 'street photography' (or park photography I suppose :p) and I think I got some OK shots. Even if they aren't great, I had A LOT of fun taking them and interacting with people. It was quite an experience :). Anyway here are a few shots from the day:
