Did anyone move from DSLR to Fuji X-E1, X-Pro1, NEX-7, NEX-6? If so what did you miss about the DSLR?

I carry my 50d far less than I would like to due to size/weight. Wondering if a move to a smaller platform would be a bad move though. Preferred subjects are home studio, my 3 yr old twins, urban, street and in the future landscape (when I get time).

I shoot an X-Pro 1 system (18/2 + an adapted 35/2, will add the 23/1.4 and 35/1.4 or Zeiss 32/1.8 in the future) alongside my SLR system (Nikon). I don't see it replacing my SLRs, but it's a different way of shooting that I prefer - I don't really like using SLRs since I feel like I'm shooting with blinders on, the Fuji system lets me shoot in the same way I would with my Leica and Hexar. I also take it with me more often than my SLRs. You will miss the faster AF though - the AF with the 18mm isn't actually that slow but if you're not used to correcting for parallax when using the OVF, it'll frustrate you since you'll think that the camera is focusing on the wrong thing. You won't have that issue with the XP1's EVF, the XE-1 or NEX-6/7.

GTRacer - stunning work (on 500px).

Can you expand on a couple of things? Why do SLR's make you shoot like you have blinders on? How do you shoot with your Leica, Hexar and Fuji?

I am most concerned about the AF since I shoot fast moving 3 yr old twins. I've never had to correct for parallax either but I am sure I can get used to / learn that.

Thanks dubcat! I haven't updated that in a while so check out my tumblr blog too, there are some XP1 images in there.

With the smaller cameras you don't get to see what the depth of field would be like (as you would with an SLR), so visually it feels more like looking through a window frame, so I feel more connected with the scene I'm photographing. Secondly, since the OVF and lens are separate, you don't have your viewfinder blacking out every time you release the shutter - you know exactly what moment you've captured when you press the shutter. You can also see what's happening outside the frame lines with the OVF too. A good way of imagining what framing with the OVF would be like is to use your index fingers and thumbs to make a rectangle and look through that. I wouldn't say it's better than viewing through the lens as they have their plus points too, I shot street on an SLR for years before moving to rangefinders/Fuji X's.

The X-Pro 1 has an option that marks out where the AF point will be below 1m in the OVF so you don't have to think about parallax too much. I think it'd be best for you to wait for the X100s though, the AF on that should be much better (so the XP2/XE2 should be much closer, if not on a par, with SLRs). I think the AF on the XP1/XE1 is acceptable, but I'm coming from a manual focus world - Fuji are supposed to be releasing a firmware update in the next week to make the AF even faster (I'll let you know what it's like). The camera has changed a lot in terms of speed since they released firmware 2.0 last year. I do shoot a lot of street on it though, if the AF really was horrible I would have returned it! I think the Sony NEX cameras are better in AF terms (their video mode is better too), you don't get the OVF of the XP1 but their EVFs are amazing (even if they don't have the advantages I mentioned above).

I looked at the x100s details from CES and it looks amazing. However, I really want to get an interchangeable lens camera. I think I will persevere with the 50d for a while longer and see what happens. I am still really tempted by the x-pro1/x-e1 though - if only I had infinite cash! /sigh

Will check out your tumbler feed tomorrow. Thanks again for the insight. Really did help.

It's those shots at night that tempts me the most towards fuji. I am guessing they are very high ISO shots but they are stunningly clean. I daren't even shoot at ISO800 on my 50d :(

Nicely done - what is your conversion to black and white method? Simply clicking on B&W in lightroom or something else? Those Fuji's seem to have a massive dynamic range. And the noise at 6400 is incredibly low - my 50d would be a mushy blur by then.

I went totally in the other direction in the end - 5d mark 3.

I have never used the coloured filter options! I will have to have a play..
