Canon have released version 1.2.3 Firmware for the Canon 5D Mark III

Can be downloaded from

http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/products/cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_5D_Mark_III.aspx

Instructions on how to upload the firmware to the Camera are included in the download.

Changes
Firmware Version 1.2.3 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the flash may not fire depending on the timing of when the shutter button is pressed.
2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF microadjustment value may change.*
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may show a line of false color along boundaries of high contrast.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the histogram of a LiveView image is incorrectly displayed when an HDMI cable is connected.
5. Enables the brightness of the camera's LCD monitor to be adjusted even when an HDMI cable is connected.
*The phenomenon listed in 2 was addressed with Firmware Version 1.2.1, and has been further improved with Firmware Version 1.2.3.

Firmware Version 1.2.3 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.2.1. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.2.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

I've noticed this a few times.

Nice!

oh sweet! need to do this as i've never done it!

do i need to go through them all one by one and then the new one?

Unless it says otherwise you can update the firmware on top of a previous version - no need to go through them all incrementally. Sometimes they might specify doing so, but in this case it isn't necessary.

If you've never upgraded the firmware before here are a few tips.

1) Make sure you have a fully charged battery - you don't want the camera to automatically switch off due to limited power during the upgrade.

2) You need to ensure that you put the firmware file in the root directory of the card you are using. I usually pop the card out place it into a card reader and then drag and drop the firmware file directly onto the card (make sure you do not put the firmware file into any folders or subfolders).

3) Follow the instructions included with the firmware.

4) Do not fiddle with any buttons or dials during the process - and wait until it is finished

5) Once completed Canon recommend you take the main battery out of the camera for a minimum of 2 seconds - then pop it back in and turn the camera on. You can then check the version of firmware that the Camera has as per the instructions.

6) Format the card - it will get rid of the firmware file you copied to it - you don't need it on the card anymore since it is now resident in the Cameras programmable chip (think of it as a Bios).

That's all there is to it :)

Oh one last thing - make sure you upgrade the Canon supplied software, such as DPP, EOS Utility etc. to the latest versions, since sometime a new Firmware can cause problems with older versions of the software.

You can find the downloads by following the link I originally posted and selecting Software (Drivers and Applications) rather than firmware. For those of you that may have lost the original Canon Software disk, Canon seem to have relented and have a downloadable package with all of the software contained within it as well :)
