If you have a Canon 7D, then you will find that they've released V2.0 of the firmware.

Added features include

Firmware Version 2.0.0 incorporates the following improvements, new functions, and fixes.
1. Improves the maximum burst in continuous shooting.
JPEG Large/Fine: About 94 (126) bursts *1 -> About 110 (130) bursts *2
RAW: About 15 (15) bursts *1 -> About 23 (25) bursts *2
RAW+JPEG Large/Fine: About 6 (6) bursts *1 -> About 17 (17) bursts *2
*1 The figures are based on Canon's testing standards (ISO 100 and Standard Picture Style) using a 4 GB card. The figures in parentheses indicate the number of shots that can be taken with an Ultra DMA (UDMA) 4-GB card, based on Canon's testing standards.
*2 The figures are based on Canon's testing standards (ISO 100 and Standard Picture Style) using an 8 GB card. The figures in parentheses indicate the number of shots that can be taken with an Ultra DMA (UDMA) 128-GB card, based on Canon's testing standards.
2. Supports a new accessory, GPS Receiver GP-E2.
3. Adds an ISO Auto maximum setting.
4. Adds an in-camera RAW processing function.
5. Adds a Quick Control function during image playback.
6. Adds a rating function.
7. Adds a JPEG resize function.
8. Adds an auto recording level manual adjustment function.
9. Adds a function to freely set text for file names.
10. Adds a function to make time zone settings.
11. Increases the screen scrolling speed when magnifying images.
12. Fixes a phenomenon where a slow shutter speed may result when an external flash is used to fire intermittent, consecutive flashes.
13. Corrects the color space information in the Exif file for movies.

As with all firmware updates - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PROPERLY.

It appears you also NEED to update EOS Utility to the latest version before it can be used with Firmware 2.0 AND they RECOMMEND you update all of the Canon utilities (such as DPP etc.) to the latest versions.

You can download from either the US Canon Site

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d/#DriversAndSoftware

or the UK Canon Site

http://software.canon-europe.com/

I downloaded it earlier, actual buffer burst rate has gone from 22 frames to 29 when shooting RAW. Moving around a magnified image is much quicker. Other bits are there but haven't really played with them, the max ISO setting works as expected.

But why do we need to update DPP etc. when I do not use them. Can we not put this firmware on a CF card then update via camera.???????

Yes you can update it via the CF card and not have to worry about DPP or any other software they updated for the version 2 firmware. If you don't use the other software don't worry about them then and do as you have done now.

As above, you only need to update the Canon software if you use it and have upgraded to the V2.0 Firmware on your 7D. If you don't upgrade the software it will probably not pick up the fact that you've got a 7D connected to your computer.

It is worth having a look at DPP and EOS Utility. DPP has some nice noise correction facilities, together with a recently added HDR function and then there is the sharpening tools as well. Canon built the camera and sensor and their software can often wring the best quality out of the kit.

EOS Utility has a nice tethered shooting facility and also allows you to input Copyright and User name into the Camera for inclusion into the RAW/JPEG file.

Last time I tried to up date via the CF the 7D would not accept the firmware file !

So I had to use the EOS utility program instead which was easy to use.

Gah, I used my 7D to shoot the Canoe Sprint today. I'd been using the 5D lately and forgot about the firmware update.

Update done, looks good, Auto Iso handy feature!

Must say my Bum was clenched during update process, especially after update completed and Camera seemed to be unresponsive...but after about 15 secs it sprung to life prompting me to reset date/time etc - All good.

Upgraded mine the other day without problems but I've heard that some people are having problems with it, specifically the camera completely freezing and needing the battery removing to recover it.

It seems to be related to the auto power-off setting, i.e. when the camera should power off, it freezes instead. It seems most, if not all, afflicted users have had success in disabling this feature. Some others have reported that clearing all custom function settings has also helped.

I've not really used my camera in anger since the update, but will be doing so next weekend. I decided to reset everything back to factory defaults and set it all up again from scratch. Will see how it goes.
