When it comes to portrait lenses, on full frame, it is generally accepted that lenses between 85mm and 135mm with an aperture faster than f/2.8 fit the bill. On crop sensor bodies the focal range is accepted as between 50mm and 85mm.
That said, rules can be broken and you can take acceptable portraits with most lenses providing you know what you're doing. The wider you go however the more unflattering the image can be. Wider lenses exaggerate features such as noses and chins and longer lenses can flatten features.

Yeah I'd go 85 personally I've never found a situation where the difference between 85mm and 100mm has left me wanting but could think of many wherein 100mm could have been slightly too long
