Hi,

so i currently have a 7D Mark II with Grip and the following kit

580EX II Flash

70-200mm f/2.8 IS MK II
100mm-400mm L IS MK II
85mm F/1.8
50mm F/1.8 MK II
Canon 1.4x TC III
24-105mm F/4 IS USM

Now i have been looking over the mirrorless bodies and pulled the trigger on the R6 MK II bundle currently on offer on the canon website

Types of photography have generally been wildlife, Horses in general, both in the field and competing, pets, family members and the odd bit of motorsport.

But, before i open it and cannon return it, do i send it back and swap it for the R5 for the extra £1000, send it back and see what the R5 MK II turns out to be or sell everything and change?

I do also have the RF-EF adapter and the battery grip for the R6

having been at work recently, i had the opportunity to use a colleagues Sony A7R III with a 100mm-400mm lense

we were shooting at 400mm most of the time, usually at Whales, Dolphins and Sealions.

what initially looked soft images, he was about to edit, crop and produce some really nice images.

now I am guessing the 42MP was able to help with this.

So do i look to switch entirely and go Sony?

The A7R V is considerably more money and id have to save for a while to get it along with glass.

Thoughts?

Thanks

you had the right idea the first time, the R6 MK 2

it completely smokes a 7D MK 2 that you have now

If your main use is wildlife and horses, then consider the new 200-800m lens which is cheaper than the "L" 100-500. There have ben some great reviews on the lens for wildlife use and the extra reach could come in very useful. The AF tracking on the R6 II will work well, even though it's f/6.3 - 9. You can get a free weekend hire/trial of any Canon lens: https://testdrive.trythekit.com/ You do have to pay a hefy deposit, but you get that back once you return the kit in the same condition. They don't yet have the 200-800 though, but you could hire the 100-500. After a free hire, they send you a cashback voucher worth 5% if you go on to buy the lens within 30 days of a hire.

The extra pixels on the R5 will only be useful if you regularly crop your images a lot and print large.
