Just how good are these dedicated macro flashes compared to a well set up "normal" flash rig?

I have a Canon 550EX which can be tilted down a little but it doesn't produce great results - shadows are harsh.
The MR-14EX Macro Flash contains 4 flash tubes which can be set in pairs to fire at different exposures and shadows are almost completely reduced.

It also means that apertures of F11-F16, with high shutter speeds and low ISO can be used to increase depth of field, reduced camera shake and noise

How much have you found it for?

Cheapest I've found is from HK : £260, VAT and import paid + £30 P&P.
The cheapest UK price is £320 including P&P

I can't wait to try this one out

Got extension tubes?

I hope that's not the kit lens I see hiding beneath that lot

That isn't my camera; I stole the picture from another website.

I have extension tubes which was another reason to get the Macro Flash. As you probably know - with the tubes fitted it's almost impossible to use it handheld.

They are shipping the flash on Monday and when it arrives i'll post some examples
