Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L USM Lens good price

this will seem like a really stupid question, but how the heck can a 17-40mm lens cost £475??? Espicially at a good price??? Please explain..... :)

It's very difficult to build a decent quality, fast, ultra wide lens; Thus the kit lens suffers wide open a great deal because canon are very limited by the amount the lens is costing to produce. You may have noticed that wide open i.e. F3.5@ 18mm the results are underwhelming in terms of contrast and overall sharpness at F8 it's not too bad.

When you buy the 17-40 you're getting ultra low dispersion glass($$$), decent build quality, full time manual focusing, the front element doesnt move when focusing(unlike the kit lens) a constant F4 throught the zoom range, and fairly low distortion. It can perform reasonably well wide open in terms of contrast and edge sharpness and colours are better produced also.

as for the topic, yeh it looks like a good price to me, i think the cheapest i found was £520!
