I would really like to know the following information about this lens:

1) What do you think of the lens, are the optics sharp? ect

2) What kind of price would you expect to pay for a brand new Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens?

3) If you have this lens and have taken some pictures with it, please could you post some of them.

Thanks, i need to know ASAP about the lens because i am considering buying one which i plan to use on thursday for photographing a rock concert. :)

i paid around £70 for mine, the build quality is ok, nothing fancy but its nice and light
the image quality is superb for such a cheap lens

I reckon you might as well buy one

heres a photo from it - its a hefty 4mb

The 50mm 1.8 is a superb lens and you won't find a better prime lens for less than £250. The MKI version is better built than the MKII but costs slightly more.
The downsides are cheap plastic build quality and slow focus.

Look at paying around £70-£75 for one - go for it :)

I paid 74.99 for mine from a UK based shop. As already said it's a good lens with sharp results although the build quality isn't great.

Some sample shots in this thread....

I can't show you any of mine as it's only been used at a wedding so far and can't really share those but it performed well especially in low light.

If you don't mind a second hand (mint condition) one, I have one for sale for £50 in the MM.

I love mine, especially now that I fixed it! (Phew!) At the moment I've got that and the kit lens. The kit lens spends most of it's life in the bag! :D

Yeh I love it, so much so only that and the 70-200 ever really make it to the end of my camera. Depth of field is lovely and the blown out background always make people go 'wow' as regular digital camera's people buy can only dream of the effect it creates.

Paid around £70 for mine in December.

being a newbie to photography im wondering when you would use this lens for specific shots? Is it mainly for portraits of people?

love mine , cheap-sharp-wide aperture :)

a 100% crop of my entry in the yellow comp thread , no sharpening at all

i'm late in replying, but a 50mm prime is really a must for everyone, they're so cheap anyway. I have the nikon 50mm f1.4 and it's brilliant, i can't claim i use it that much (i love the flexibility of a decent zoom) but it's damn good when i do. personally my favourite recent use of it was a few close ups of a fountain...

a few in this set...

- as always, c&c welcome on those photos...

I've been considering buying the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 for ages but just can't see when I would ever use it, so instead I put the £70 towards a 77mm Polarizer filter :)

Sorry but I disagree. I've really tried to like the 50mm F1.8, honestly, I'm now on my third copy. It just doesn't suit anything I do so this one's going to be sold as well.

Even though it is cheap if it's not used it's just a waste of money :)

Fair enough, for some people it will never be used, personally i think it's such a fast lens for so little money, even if you only take a few shots with it, it's worth it. you on canon or nikon?? 've tried nikon's f1.8 and f1.4 and i've found the 1.4 to be a superior lens.

Canon, never tried the 1.4 but most folk seem to say it's a good bit better than the F1.8 as well. Just to be clear I'm not knocking the lens. For the cash it's absolutely brilliant value, that's why I've tried it so often. :)

fair enough, I'm on nikon so it's a different lens, and i appreciate that with digital the crop factor makes it a less than frequently used focal length (slightly more so with canon)
