Canon EOS 1100D

The 1100D is a good starter DSLR camera, but the Nikon D3100 is a far superior starting camera and its around the same price (plus you get a £40 cash back, so its actually cheaper).

For starters, it's higher MP, it has a larger screen, and films in HD (whereas the canon is only 720p)

Heres a side by side comparison: http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos1100d&products=nikon_d3100

But, when selling cameras I always recommend people actually try the cameras for themselves, to see which one feels better for them :)

thank you for the reply cstones183. much appreciated. i'll look into the nikon and also the link to the side by side comparison site. very helpful. :)

As cstones mentioned, it's better to pop down to your local camera shop and see which DSLR feels the best in your hands. The differences between most modern entry level DSLRs is minimal so you can't really go wrong.

Well, it is a good deal and it isn't at the same time. Seeing as the camera with the kit lens is around £400, so you paying £100 for a 55-200 Non VR Lens.
Some may say that the non VR lens isn't really worth the £100.
Imho, buy the £400 bundle with the kit lens and maybe save up for the 55-200 VR lens or the 35mm f1.8 VR.

thank you for this advice.

as a complete beginner into photography is there a ghood site which explains the different lenses/VR/Non VR etc

VR = vibration reduction. it is worth it's weight in gold. You can reduce your shutter speed by up to four stops before getting blur due to camera shake usefull at long focal lengths

The AF-S 35mm f1.8 isn't a VR lens mate. Its sat on my D5100 at the moment and its easily worth the money by a country mile!

The 55-200 is also on my hit list and I'm planning on upgrading to that from my sigma 70-300

sorry to drag an old thread up but it's been a busy few months.

we never got round to purchasing a camera as i was made redundant in Aug '11. But now we're in a position to buy one it's pretty much still the same question as before.

Is the Canon 1100D or the Nikon 3100 the best two starter DSLR's on the market?

i'd also like to take panoramic shots too. are the two options above capable of this?

Budget is around £400

any help is appreciated.

i've just found the Nikon 3100 for £329. Which is a fantastic price.

also what is the best sdhc card to get for it? some places are offering extreme cards which claim to be much faster than standard ones. is this true or should i save my money and just buy a standard card?
