A friend of mine wants a DSLR, they hate Sony so will not even consider their SLT's. That left us with Canon and Nikon really. They will be starting from scratch so want to get a camera that's both excellent for a beginner and has the scope for advanced intermediate use later on.

We were thinking therefore about the Canon 700D or Nikon D5200.

Their primary use will be British wildlife and general.

Thoughts and recommendations on which brand to go for and why?

if it was me id go for a nikon d300/300s which can be had at a good price at the moment and spend the rest on descent glass, a good telephoto and a micro lense, both models are pro bodys but easy to use.
