Someone on the MM is selling a Canon EX580 MK i for £140 collected and while it appeals to me, I wanted to know if there are any alternatives worth considering.

All I'm after is the ability to use slave/master and for the flash to recognise the zoom. Sorry but I'm not all pally with the terminology and the cheaper the better, but I don't want to loose functionality.

Only ever used 580's myself but I know the YongNuo's get a lot of love on line as a cheaper alternative. Might be worth a search on here.

Godox V850c (manual flash HSS)
Godox v860c (E-TTL HSS)

Lithium Battery, more powerful, cheaper. Cant go wrong

EX580 MKII is the one to have.

save you pennies and go for the MKII as it has the flexibility to be a slave or master unit

Same as the one I've purchased, YN-568EX-II. The Godox v860c looks like it could be a great addition though.

Crazy expensive for the average hobbyist compared to the competition, if your rich or it's your job go with the above advice otherwise the cheaper alternatives in this thread are all top notch!

Yes it is expensive, however I would always suggest buying a used unit as it is much cheaper option.

I've seen 580 mkII's going for less than £200 recently. I went through a lot of the alternatives (2 years ago, so newer models may be improved) and whilst the features are matched I found they didn't keep up (overheating mainly) with continued use (wedding receptions/disco). I always ended up using my 430EXII! I've still got a Nissin knocking around somewhere...
