I'm currently using a Canon IXUS 860is, bought in 2007, so I'm well overdue for an upgrade. And this time I want to go for a 24mm wide lens. The thing is, up to now, nothing's really caught my eye. Except the Ixus 255, and the S110.

I'm very much a point-and-shoot 'photographer', and generally leave things on auto. My philosophy has always been to take a lot of photos as some will certainly be good. So I was thinking of the IXUS 255. But I was a little disappointed that the sensor size has hardly increased.

Then I saw the Canon S110 (Powershot not Ixus). The sensor size is larger, so the picture quality should be better. But I'm a little worried about the amount of manual adjustments that can be made. It seems a bit of a waste to leave it in Auto mode. And if I passed the camera to someone else to take a group photo, would it be simple enough for them to use?

Having said that, the Canon S110 is only slightly more than the IXUS 255 out here, and maybe it's about time I learned a little more about photography. Both are within my budget.

Canon Ixus 255 : £165
Canon S110 : £243 (47% more).

So please help me choose!

We have a canon s100 which lives 90% of the time on full auto and takes brilliant pictures, the default jpegs are generally excellent and the low light performance is streets ahead of any compact we have owned before. When on holiday we often hand it to other people to take a picture of us and it has yet to let us down, the manual options are all there if you want them but if you want them down the line.

Thanks. Then I'm pretty much decided. The pictures I have seen online of the IXUS 255 haven't really stood out in my opinion. And having not bought a new camera in such a long time, I deserve something a little better like the S110. Maybe it will encourage me to go for a DSLR in the future too! The price difference between the two cameras out here is really not that much, so I will go for the S110.
