I've never bought a lens hood before but im wanting to buy 5 for my various lenses. Genuine canon seem to range from ~£20 to ~£35, while you can get 3rd party ones for £6 off amazon etc.

Now, its just a bit of plastic isnt it, or am I wrong? Do the 3rd party ones not fit properly/ crap quality?

I would have liked to have kept everything genuine canon but if the others are just as good, then thats a lot of money to be saved

I bought a 3rd party hood from fleabay when I had my 10-22 and it was fine.

It wasn't the same quality as the ones that came with the L lenses, but for the couple of quid I paid for it, it was absolutely fine.

Only third party hood I've got (28-135) is an absolute PITA to get on / off.

Other than that though, you can't really go wrong with a lens hood, it's not like they have any real optical effects....

Apart from the different grade of plastic I have noticed that 3rd party hoods do not ( most of time ) have the felt that is on the inside of a canon ( later models ) hoods.
Of one can modify this easily enough !
