Take footage from mini DV -> PC (Canon MVX330i)

Hi there, I have 2 machines, one running windows xp and one running vista 64 bit, both have firewire ports. Basically I have some mini dv tapes with footage on them that I want transferring to PC. I have the manual but no CDs and have looked in vain for software from cannons site that could be relevent.

Basically when I plug it into my pc by firewire, nothing happens, I tried windows movie maker and sony vegas to capture video from it but it says no device is detected. I also tried using a usb cable and again nothing happend on either machine.

I have tried selecting different modes, playback, camera etc, and it just won't detect it, I've tried 2 firewire cables and tested the port (my external hard drive works over firewire fine.

Anyone know how to do this? You'd be a lifesaver.

Hmm, tried a third PC and it just doesnt pick it up :/ even without software it should still say "windows has detected x device" right?

My DVcam didn't need any drivers to be installed, It just worked when streaming over firewire. Nero Vision picked it up and let me record its video to my HD. It did notify my that windows had detected it though.
