My brother bought one a couple of years ago, it came with the "standard" lens.

I'm thinking of buying him a lens for Xmas, but I have no idea what the lens was that was supplied with his camera. I don't know the actual model number of the Rebel either.

Not wanting to embarrass myself and buy him a lens that is useless, can anybody fill in the blanks?

The problem I have is that I don't know what the lens he has is exactly, it is digital though. He bought the Rebel 'kit'.

I know it is a zoom and I think it is a similar type to the Nikon D70 kit that I bought, in that it is in the range of 18-70mm (approx). If it is, I would look at the 70-200mm (approx) range for him.

As it is for a Xmas present, I don't really want to ask him!

The Rebel is the US name for the 300D, and he probably got the 18-55 lens, which isnt the best lens in the world.

What kind of budget have you got?

£500 or thereabouts. He has children and I'm thinking about a zoom lens that would be good for portraits amongst other things. The versatility of a zoom would be useful, I don't really want to consider prime lenses. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM looks interesting. He doesn't need F2.8 etc, that would be wasted money as he wouldn't use it enough! I think the "IS" version would be a little too rich for me and I'm not at all convinced it is value for money.
