Due to the amount of things we have to carry around with 2 kids in tow, we need an alternative to the Canon EOS (Entry Level one) and the Canon Elura 100 camcorder.

I have seen the Canon S100 and think this could be "the one"

Thoughts please guys?

The S100 is a great take anywhere pocket size camera and it takes really lovely pictures,

I can see wha the RX100 is getting a lot of good press but it was just too pricey for me!

Thanks mate

I really need the camera to produce good quality video (as best as can be from a camera)

So is the RX100 worth the extra £150-£200 for the "better" video? How good is the video on the S100?

From another thread:

I use an S100 as my pocket camera. It’s very good and so small that you don’t notice it in a shirt pocket. The lens coverage, 24-120mm makes it perfect for travel photography. The video quality is good and of course you get raw and full manual control. The control ring feature is nice and it is well built. The charger is small as are the batteries so again good for travel. You can get one for £325 from a reputable source. It is a real gem and highly recommended.

I use the S95 and it is a fine camera like the S100. However, the RX100 is in another league TBH and I am being objective here, even though I really like Canon higher end compacts.

The video alone is massively better - the S100 can only do 1920X1080 at 24FPS,not the 60FPS of the RX100. It is the best compact for video. It is better in the highlights and AFAIK the RAW files probably have greater dynamic range. Low light ability is better.

Also, since the physical sensor is much larger, the lower depth of field can be nicer for things like portraits too.

Can i retract my bid on the S100:D

Well, it seems a straight shootout between S100 and RX100. I may wait and see how the prices retract in the next few months.

Thanks all:p

I don't think you can really compare the S100 and the RX100 directly given the price difference, basically if you have the budget for the RX100 get it if not take the much cheaper S100 neither will disapoint you.

Only other slight issue might be the extra width of the RX100 in your jeans pockets but guess that depends on the jeans!
